“Until there is a cure for cancer, there will always be a reason to swim all across America.” - Matt Vossler, Co-Founder, SAA
Well it’s that time of year again when I add to the list of bad things I do for good causes! I am going to try to squeeze back into my wetsuit for the 3rd annual Swim Across America Bay Swim to raise awareness (and yes money) to continue the fight against cancer.
On October 18th, I will jump into the SF Bay as part of 1.5 mile swim beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, circle around the bridge pylon and head back to Crissy Field Beach.
I am proud to say that the money I raise will go to such a worthy cause: Cutting edge cancer research, treatment and patient care at UCSF Children's Hospital Cancer Survivorship Program and Children's Hospital Oakland. Three out of every four families are directly impacted by cancer, and Swim Across America is working hard to fund research all over the United States to help to find a cure for this horrible disease. As we swim, we honor those currently battling cancer and those that have survived its devastating effects.
As many of you know, this last year has been full of profound sadness as well as praises for me and my family. Sadly, we lost a dear friend and colleague, Christine, after a brave seven year battle with cancer. As I swim this year I will be remembering the years of smiles she left with us. My brother-in-law Lenin and friend Ken have had difficult, but positive years battling cancer and are, due to great advances in medical care, in and headed toward recovery!
