Rob Butcher, President and CEO Rob became the President and CEO of Swim Across America on January 1, 2016. Previously, Rob was the executive director of U.S. Masters Swimming. Under his leadership, USMS created a nationwide program that provides certification to coaches, instructors, and aquatic directors who are coaching adults. In 2012, Rob's team created the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation that advocates and provides grants to program partners that are teaching adults to swim. USMS membership increased more than 50% to more than 60,000 and revenue increased from $1M to $3.6M. Rob swam four years for Georgia Southern University, earning both his undergraduate and Masters degrees from GSU. He competed in the 2000 USA Olympic Trials. Rob and his wife Allison are parents to twin boys. Like so many affected by cancer, Rob's mom Maria, his hero, passed from appendix cancer in 2007.
Bob Coakley, Treasurer Bob serves as chairman of COED Media Group, LLC. In previous years, Bob was the Chairman of Win Futures Inc, a commodity-trading firm on the New York Mercantile Exchange where he also served as a Member of the Board of Directors at the New York Mercantile Exchange. A graduate of Fordham University, Bob received his bachelors in accounting and finance. He was a four year letterman on both the swimming and waterpolo team. Bob resides with his wife Lisa in Florida and their two "furry" children Karma & Duke. We're proud to acknowledge that Bob has been involved with Swim Across America for 23 years and founded the SAA - Hudson River event. Bob has served as Treasurer for SAA for over 15 years.
Hugh R. Curran, Chair of the Board Hugh is a Partner at Bletzer & Bletzer, PC where he practices in Connecticut and Massachusetts State and Federal Courts in civil and criminal litigation. Prior to joining Bletzer & Bletzer, Hugh was a Partner at Bonner Kiernan Trebach & Crociata where he counseled clients and defended matters involving insurance defense, general and products liability, professional malpractice, civil rights, employment, white collar criminal and business litigation matters. From 1988 through 1996 Hugh had a successful career as an Assistant District Attorney in the office of the Suffolk County District Attorney. Hugh is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and received his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University. Hugh is chair of the Swim Across America Board of Directors and has been involved since its inception in 1987.
Pam Ryan Pam joined Goldman Sachs in 1986 after receiving her MS in Management from the Sloan School at MIT. Pam is a graduate of Harvard University where she was Captain of the Harvard Swimming and Diving Team and an NCAA Diving Champion. She was inducted into the Harvard Hall of Fame in 1998. Prior to joining Goldman, Pam worked as Director of Data Processing for the Boston Red Sox Baseball Club. Pam serves on the Board of Directors of the Ipswich YMCA and the Visiting Committee to the Department of Athletics at Harvard. She became a Vice President of Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1990 and Managing Director in 2003.
Jack Salerno Jack joined EMC in 2003 and has held marketing management positions in Channel Marketing, Commercial Marketing and CLARiiON Product Marketing organizations. Prior to joining EMC, Jack was Vice President of Business Development and Product Management for TidalWire. Previously Jack worked in brand management at Procter & Gamble and sales management with IBM Corporation. He is a graduate of Boston College and received his MBA from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University
Kevin Shine Kevin is an executive with Verizon responsible for Datacenter Operations and Information Technology support. Kevin has over 28 years of experience in the IT industry, including a decade with IBM as a systems engineer, client manager, and certified consultant. In addition to Swim Across America, Kevin is involved with many local charities, serving on the Board of MercyFirst Children and Family Services in Syosset, NY, and on the executive committee for our SAA - Nassau/Suffolk and Long Island events. Kevin graduated from Boston College in 1984 with a degree in computer science and mathematics and currently resides in Garden City, NY, with his wife Loree and six children: Erinn, Bethany, Cathryne, Brenna, Mackenzie and Meredith.
Doug Towne Doug is a Managing Director of HQ Trading LLC. Doug and his wife Pam created and market a pool toy conceived by their youngest son Garrett. A jigsaw style puzzle, The Underwater Puzzle, is designed to sink to the bottom of a swimming pool where the puzzle is assembled. Doug swam for the Badger Swim Club, the Hackley School and the University of Iowa where he studied economics. As a post grad he swam for the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) and is now a member of the committee that manages the NYAC post grad and elite swim programs. In 1991, after Doug’s father successfully beat throat and colon cancer, Doug participated in his first SAA event. Doug was on the committees that started the SAA - Hudson River, the SAA - Greenwich/Stamford and the SAA - NYAC events. Doug resides in Tarrytown, NY with his wife Pam and three children, all who have been active in numerous SAA events.
Evan Vosburgh M.D., Beneficiary Committee Chair Evan is a board certified hematologist and medical oncologist who served on the faculty of the Boston University School of Medicine for 10 years where be combined clinical care, teaching, administrative oversight of clinical research programs in cancer clinical trials, hemophilia, and systemic amyloidosis, including autologous stem cell therapy. Currently he is a clinical associate professor at Yale University School of Medicine and attending physician at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital. Since 2003 he has been the Executive Director of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation based in New York City and Stamford, CT. Evan is on the Board of Directors of the Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership Foundation in NYC, an education first/ sports second middle-school program working with inner city students.
Matt Vossler, Governance Chair
Matt is a co-founder of Swim Across America, and he is proud that the fledging enterprise he started with Jeff Keith has raised over $60 million. Matt previous served as Board Chair and oversaw our partnership and contributions with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The David Perini Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, The Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy, and many others. Since 2004 Matt has been a Partner with Heritage Partners International, a retained executive search and consulting company based in Norwalk, CT. Previously, he was associated with a number of other search firms, including Heidrick & Struggles, Inc. Matt is a graduate of Boston College and in 2004 received the Alumni Achievement Award for public service. He resides in Darien, CT with his wife Pamela and their two children.
Burt Zweigenhaft Burt has extensive experience in a broad spectrum of bio-pharmaceutical services and health care companies. He is the CEO of OncoMed. Burt is a member of the AMCP and ASCO. He also serves on the Editorials Boards of the Oncology Pharmacist, the Oncology Nurse, Multidisciplinary Oncology and the Value Based Managed Care Pharmaceutical Care publications. Burt holds a BS degree in Management and Economics from the University of Buffalo, where he also serves on the Dean's Advisory Committee and is active with their School of Pharmacy. He lives in New York City.
