Swim Across America Donated Funds
The funds raised at the 2012 and 2013 Long Beach Open Water Swim will support a study to identify effective new personalized treatments for patients with non-small cell lung cancer tumors carrying LKB1 (Liver Kinase B1) mutations. To date there are
no targeted therapies for LKB1 mutant lung cancer, which occurs in
approximately 30% of non-small cell lung cancer patients.
In our early
phase trials to measure if these drugs kill LKB1 mutant lung tumor cells, we will surgically
remove tumor samples from lung cancer patients, then test them for LKB1
mutations followed by additional testing and finally treat the tissue with a
combination of drugs such as metformin or targeted therapies.
Recently published preclinical studies, have demonstrated LKB1 mutations
are sensitive to metabolic drugs (Metabolic drugs interfere with the normal
processes of cancer cells by mimicking required chemicals, tricking the cells
into incorporating the drug).
If this study is
successful, it is our belief that these medicines, will constitute less toxic
personalized treatments for patients whose lung cancers carry LKB1 mutations.

Your Support for the Future Todd Cancer Institute
meet the needs of our community, Long Beach Memorial is building a new 64,000
sq. ft. pavilion for the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute. The pavilion will
be complete with many of the services that cancer patients and their families
need with space to expand our capacity and provide additional patient services.
Long Beach Memorial will have a comprehensive setting to continue offering the
best care and latest treatment options for cancer.
vision is to create a facility where the most advanced technology and therapies
are available for cancer patients and their families. It will be a place where
the patient's medical, emotional and spiritual needs are met. The new pavilion
will put all cancer services and supportive care programs under one roof, in a
healing peaceful environment.
Long Beach Memorial needs the community's support to help fund the
Todd Cancer Pavilion at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute. Generations to
come will benefit from the new pavilion and the many services and programs that
will be made available under one roof. The Todd Cancer Pavilion is a $31
million project. With institutional funds of $20.7 million committed and $7 million in philanthropic funds already raised, an additional $3 million of
community support is needed to make this a reality. By giving to this project,
you will touch the lives of many patients and families facing cancer or who
will face a diagnosis of cancer in the future.
