Baltimore Open Water Swim

September 18th

Welcome to the Swim Across America - Baltimore Open Water Swim.  Swimmers of all ages are invited to take part in our annual event in beautiful Redhouse Cove (High Tide Farm at 5101 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122). Whether you are a veteran swimmer or you're looking to do your first open water swim, we welcome you to help us fight cancer at the Swim Across America Lab at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

All swimmers raise money to support the cause, and those who feel particularly motivated to raise even more, can register as WaveMaker Swimmers. We welcome you to help us "Make Waves to Fight Cancer!"

Fundraising Requirements for Everyone:

All swimmers are required to raise at least $500 by event day. Swimmers under 18 are required to raise $300 by event day. This is a fundraising event, and we ask all of our swimmers to put forth a concerted effort to raise money for cancer research. Most swimmers find that it is surprisingly easy to raise money, especially those swimmers who use the website we provide to update their personal page and send emails.

The open water event will be capped this year to the first 475 swimmers. Register early!

Age Requirements

Swimmers must be at least 14 years old.

Swimmers under 14 years old – A minimum of either one parent or legal guardian of swimmers under 12 to 14 years old, agree to swim along side of her/him for the duration of the swim or if the parent or guardian is not participating in the event, he/she agrees to have another qualified participating adult, whom they shall specify on swim day, swim along side his/her child for the duration of the swim. (Exceptions to be reviewed by Event Director prior to event date.)

Fundraising Minimum – $500.00
Fundraising Minimum under 18 – $300.00

Registration Fees:

There is a registration fee that will be credited towards each swimmer's fundraising minimum after registering. The registration fee will change as follows:

  • Register before July 1st with a registration fee of $25
  • Register between July 1st and August 1st with a registration fee of $50
  • Register on or after August 1st with a registration fee of $100

Giving:

All donations are tax-deductible. Proceeds from the Baltimore Swim will be donated to cancer research, prevention and treatment at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

In the Swim Across America Laboratory at Johns Hopkins, scientists recently received worldwide attention for developing a genomic-based test for ovarian and endometrial cancers, using fluid collected from routine pap tests. The new test, called PapGene, is undergoing further testing, but promises to pioneer the use of genomic-based screening tests. Click here to learn more!

You may support the swimmer of your choice by making an online donation. Or you may send a check, payable to Swim Across America-Baltimore and mail to:

Swim Across America-Baltimore

PO Box 10493
Baltimore, MD  21209

Be sure to indicate the name of the swimmer you are donating to.

Swim Angels:

For those people who are nervous about swimming in the open water, we have "swim angels" who are willing to swim alongside you for encouragement. These people are experienced open water swimmers who are more than happy to encourage you, keep an eye on you and ease any anxiety you may have.

Additionally, those wishing to sign up as swim angels can sign up as a part of Team Angel. If you would like to sign up and fundraise with a different team, but are interested in being a swim angel, please reach out to Annie directly at apple1159@aol.com

Venue:

We will once again have the swim at the beautiful High Tide Farm at 5101 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122. The body of water we will be swimming in is the Redhouse Cove.  It is a gorgeous cove with flat water making it very swimmer friendly!

Weather:

Real time weather update on the Baltimore area from our favorite weather team over at ABC2!

Course:

The swim course will be the same 1 mile loop as in years past.  Swimmers have the option of a 1 or 3 mile swim.  See above time line for start sequence.

3 mile swimmers will exit the water after each loop, take a brief jog on the sand and reenter the course.  If you choose to swim 3 miles, you must complete your first 2 loops by 10:10 AM to reenter the course to complete the final mile.  This will assure that we fulfill our obligation to clear the course for public use and assure that our wonderful volunteers can participate in the festivities.

This swim is non-competitive, though timing chips will be provided. It is mandatory that all swimmers have the timing chip on their ankle prior to entering the start pen.

NO CHANGES TO SWIM DISTANCE WILL BE MADE AFTER WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 OR ON EVENT DAY.

Please observe the NO PETS ALLOWED policy at the Baltimore SAA venue.  If not observed, your pet must be confined to your vehicle. Thank you!

Wetsuits/Temperature:

Wetsuits are optional, but strongly encouraged. Water temperatures range from 65-75 degrees in September. Last year the water was a perfect 73 degrees and felt warm.

Beginner Swimmers Training:

Interested in participating but need to learn how to swim for your first open water experience? We have designed a 16 week program to help you get ready. First come, first serve. Space is limited. Click here for more information.
