ABOUT

In its first year, Swim Across America - Baltimore set the record for the largest inaugural event in SAA history. The open water and pool swims have grown and have raised over $3 million in 7 years for the Swim Across America Lab at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

Join us at High Tide Farm for a beautiful 1 mile or 3 mile swim in the Magothy River. We also offer opportunities to volunteer as a boater, kayaker or land volunteer. This event is not a competition, but a fun fundraising event for everyone.

If you have any questions about SAA - Baltimore, please contact Annie Applegarth.

VENUE

High Tide Farm:

We will once again have the swim at the beautiful High Tide Farm at 5101 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122. The body of water we will be swimming in is the Redhouse Cove. It is a gorgeous cove with flat water making it very swimmer friendly!

The Course:

The swim course will be the same 1 mile loop as in years past. Swimmers have the option of a 1 or 3 mile swim. See above time line for start sequence.

3 mile swimmers will exit the water after each loop, take a brief jog on the sand and reenter the course. If you choose to swim 3 miles, you must complete your first 2 loops by 10:10 AM to reenter the course to complete the final mile. This will assure that we fulfill our obligation to clear the course for public use and assure that our wonderful volunteers can participate in the festivities.

This swim is non-competitive, though timing chips will be provided. It is mandatory that all swimmers have the timing chip on their ankle prior to entering the start pen.

SAFETY

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all our swimming events. A Safety Director is responsible for coordinating all activities within an event, and works closely with the local Fire, Police and EMT's to ensure swimmer safety. We will have a number of lifeguards, safety kayakers and safety boats out on the course with us to ensure swimmer safety at all times. All boats are able to communicate via both hand held and ship to shore radios. All swimmers are required to follow specific procedures to participate in the event. These procedures are designed to protect swimmers from injury and will be enforced by the Safety Director.

Waiver:

All swimmers and volunteers must complete the waiver found here. Please bring it with you to the event.

GETTING THERE

Directions and Parking:

For mapping purposes, you can use the address for the 5101 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122.

From the southern portion of the Baltimore Beltway #695, Take Rt. 10 South and follow signs to Rt. 100 (bears off to the left). Follow signs for Rt. 177 (also known as Mountain Road) and follow for approximately 3.75 miles at which point it bears off to the right (there is a sign & we will have lighted balloons at this location). From that point, it is 1.25 to the site which will be on the right.

There is ample parking in a large flat field at no cost. However, we ask that you consider car pooling to lessen the environmental impact and to avoid traffic congestion on the signal lane road. There will be two Policemen to control the traffic from Rt. 177 into the field. Look for lighted filled balloons as you approach the turn into the parking.

BENEFICIARY

MSKCC

A full timeline of achievements credited to SAA-Baltimore grants and future projects can be found here.

Monies from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Swim events funded groundbreaking research in immunotherapy. In a report of a proof-of-principle study of patients with colon and other cancers for whom standard therapies failed, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center saw that mistakes in so-called mismatch repair genes, first identified by Johns Hopkins and other scientists two decades ago, may accurately predict who will respond to certain immunotherapy drugs known as PD1 inhibitors. Results of the trial with pembrolizumab, marketed as Keytruda, was published by the New England Journal of Medicine on June 25, 2015. On May 23, 2017 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval to a treatment for patients whose cancers have a specific genetic feature (biomarker). This is the first time the agency has approved a cancer treatment based on a common biomarker rather than the location in the body where the tumor originated.
