It’s year 7! Over the years I have raised over $73,000 with your help. Swim Across America (SAA) is a nationwide organization that collects money for cancer research. I will be participating in the Baltimore Open Water Swim on September 17. All donations go to the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. This year my goal is to raise $17,000 to raise my overall total to $90,000. I am honored to have raised so much with the help of so many generous sponsors.
SAA offers a 1, 3, or 5 mile swim. Again this year I will be swimming 3 miles in the Magothy Bay. This year I will be joined by some teammates from the Retriever Aquatic Club, my mom, and my brother (joining us to swim his first mile!).
For me, Swim Across America is not just about finding a cure; it’s about honoring and helping those diagnosed and their families. My motivation is my brother Michael along with Dr. Robert Arceci, my great-aunt Alison, and my Uncle Michael. When I was 2 Michael was born and when I was 3 he was diagnosed with mixed leukemia. Later that year, he died before reaching his first birthday. Michael was my little angel and I don’t want other families to go through what I did. I also swim for Dr. Robert Arceci, or “Dr. Bob”. Two years ago as of June 8th, Dr. Bob was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was Michael’s pediatric oncologist and being the loving, kind, and friendly person he was, he and his team did everything they could for him. Lastly, I swim for my great-aunt Alison who died of lung cancer after 7 years and my Uncle Michael who died at 16 of glioblastoma, a very fatal type of brain cancer.
With the help of your donations the SAA lab in Baltimore was able to fund the research that led to the approval of a new cancer treatment - Keytruda. Keytruda targets cancer based on the genetics of the disease, rather than attacking the sight of the tumor. KeyTruda now can be used for colon, pancreatic, stomach, ovarian and other cancers. Last year I was able to meet two cancer survivors saved by the studies funded by Swim Across America.
Any donations to either me or any of my teammates would be greatly appreciated. As many of you may know I am hoping to receive the Alec Cosgarea award once again. The Alec Cosgarea award is a tribute to NBAC swimmer and SAA participant. The highest fundraiser under the age of 18 receives the Alec Cosgarea award. I thank you for your consideration and donations.
PLEASE DONATE SO A CURE FOR CANCER CAN BE FOUND AND MORE LIVES ARE NOT LOST!
