In January 2018, my husband, Rick Osterberg, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. He is responding well to treatment and, if all goes according to plan, will finish the chemotherapy phase of his treatment plan and start radiation within weeks of this year's SAA Boston Harbor Swim. This year, I swim for Rick!
Rick and I were committed to Swim Across America before he was diagnosed. For the past several years, Rick has taken photos of the SAA Boston Harbor Swim and uploaded them from the boats. He has arranged for real-time tracking of the SAA crew's location. In April of the past several years, he has run the scoreboard and announced the Boston Pool Relay event. I have swum the Harbor Relay twice and have brought the high school team that I coach to the Boston Pool Relay each of the last three years.
Now, our commitments are more personal. The money we raise this year may help Rick cope with neuropathy and other potential side effects of his treatments. It will help him cope as a survivor. In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. That statistic now includes Rick.
I am challenging myself by swimming in the Boston Harbor Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as I can. Please support me by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
