In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the Charlotte Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as we can. Please support us by sponsoring our swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. 80% of the fundraising dollars stays here in Charlotte and will go to the Levine Cancer Center in which it will be used for much needed research.
All of us on the South Meck Swim & Dive team has in some way been affected by someone who has cancer whether a family member or a friend. Won't you please join in South Meck’s effort to raise money and be a part of the Open Water Swim the afternoon of September 23rd at the Lake Norman YMCA. We may have our own personal connections, in addition, we are supporting an alumni of our team and her mom who is currently going through treatment, please see her note below:
My name is Karen Devine and I have been involved with competitive swimming for over 12 years. My two children have swum for Olde Georgetowne summer team and my daughter Karley swam for SWIMMAC Carolina. She also was captain of the South Mecklenburg girls team and now swims for Gettysburg College I swam summer league as a child.
Recently I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, known as Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I am working with Levine’s Cancer Institute to fight this. They have been wonderful. My treatment as of right now is 6 cycles of chemotherapy, (1 every 3 weeks). My first one was April 7th and hopefully my last one will be July 21st. After the chemo, they will scan me to see what will happen next. More than likely some kind of surgery, what kind will depend on the results of the chemotherapy. And then after the surgery, radiation, and then hopefully be cured! That is the goal!
I am thrilled to be working with all of you to help raise funds for Levine’s Cancer Institute. An organization that is on the brink of some very important research and cures for all types of Cancers. Swimming has been a big part of our family’s life and now cancer is too, and by putting the two together to help make a difference is wonderful way make it even more worth it! Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
