ABOUT

The Long Island Sound Swim, now in its 26th year, continues to be the largest of all the SAA events. We have our signature open water swim along with eight pool swim options throughout July and August. Our open water course takes us from Larchmont Yacht Club start to Larchmont Shore Club finish, making our way along the shore. We welcome all those new and returning SAA swimmers to take part in the 10K, 5K or 2K swim options. Thank you for helping us “Make Waves to Fight Cancer."

The Long Island Sound Swim has been raising money for cancer research, prevention and treatment since 1992. It was, and still is, dedicated to the memory of Kathy Webers - forever in our hearts. In our first year, we had 35 swimmers and raised $15,000. In 2017, we had over 900 swimmers and raised $1,100,000. Due to our faithful swimmers, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors, Long Island Sound has become one of the most distinguished open water swims in the country. Please join us as we swim into our 26th year in 2018.

If you have any questions about SAA - Long Island Sound, please contact Tony Sibio.

SAFETY

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all our swimming events. A Safety Director is responsible for coordinating all activities within an event, and works closely with the local Fire, Police and EMT's to ensure swimmer safety. We will have a number of lifeguards, safety kayakers and safety boats out on the course with us to ensure swimmer safety at all times. All boats are able to communicate via both hand held and ship to shore radios. All swimmers are required to follow specific procedures to participate in the event. These procedures are designed to protect swimmers from injury and will be enforced by the Safety Director.

Waiver:

All swimmers and volunteers must complete the waiver found here.

SAA - LONG ISLAND SOUND HISTORY

The Long Island Sound Swim started in Larchmont, New York in 1992 at the Larchmont Yacht Club with a 4-mile swim. It was, and still is, dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Kathy Webers, who along with family and friends courageously battled cancer for over a year. Our first year we had 35 swimmers and raised $15,000.

1994: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (NYC) renamed one of its highest priority labs in honor of Swim Across America. It was also the first year that the swim's course ended at the Larchmont Shore Club, where a celebratory brunch was held.

1996: Without a swim in 1996, the LIS Committee reformed; in addition to the 4-mile swim added the 1- mile swim. Cancer Support Team and Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian at Columbia University Medical Center were added as additional beneficiaries.

1999: The Orienta Beach Club Pool 1/2 and 1-mile swims were added to provide for a less intense swim option to those who wanted to participate and support LIS events.

2003: A 6 mile swim was added to our open water swim for those who wanted to raise the bar on their swimming and fundraising capabilities.

2005: NYAC Travers Island Pool Swim was added to our events and we broke the $1 million fundraising mark.

2011: The Swim Across America lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center announced their development of an FDA-approved revolutionary new drug to treat advanced skin cancer. We added more pool swims, introduced the "pool crawl" and raised over $1,245,000.

2017: Marked our 25th year raising money to fight cancer through research and patient care.

2018: We will celebrate our 26th year of fighting cancer in the Long Island Sound.
