Everyone Deserves A Hug!
I am a big believer in fate and things happening for a reason. After 6 years of supporting Swim Across America, my nephew (Tim Buttigieg) and I took last year off from the Larchmont Long Island charity swim event. We were proud of the money we had raised over the years (just shy of $200,000) and the positive impact we had in the fight against cancer, but it was time for a break. This past December, we celebrated Valerie Wilson Travel’s 35th anniversary and I selected Swim Across America as a recipient of our company’s charitable initiative called the VWT Giving Tree. These last 6 months have re-engaged me with the Swim Across America team and their mission. Incredible organization and so proud of the work they are doing.
Did you know that every 15 minutes, 50 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer? Sobering reality. Over the last 30 years, SAA has raised $70 million for cancer research and clinical trials. During a recent meeting with one of the Board of Directors and SAA Founders, he said, “there is still work to be done.” So, the goggles are being dusted off. YIKES…
I will be swimming on Saturday, July 29th for my 7th 2K open water charity swim in the Long Island Sound....and Tim has decided to swim with me! And, my son, Andrew, will be doing his 2nd SAA swim from Camp Dudley in Lake Champlain. While I still really, really hate open water swimming, I am going for it (again). My goal is to raise $30,000 in honor of SAA’s 30th Anniversary. Go Team Wetty/Buttigeig!!
As much as I believe in fate, I also believe that everyone deserves a hug (I love hugs!!). Through my swimming and fundraising efforts to fight cancer, I hope to send hugs for those who are fighting cancer. For those who have been touched by cancer. For those who are taking care of cancer patients. For those who are working to find a cure for cancer. And, for those who simply need a hug. We all deserve them!
Please consider making a donation and join Andrew, Tim and me in making waves to fight cancer. Feel free to donate to any one of us...it all goes to the same great cause!
Wishing you a joyous and happy summer!
With love and HUGS,
