I am participating for the fifth year for Team Mackey in this Swim Across America event in the Long Island Sound. Having done the 5K the last three years, including last year's in the pool after the open water swim was canceled due to inclement weather (on the 25th anniversary, no less!), I have decided to up the ante and do the 10K swim this year. The 10K swim starts in Glen Cove, Long Island and finishes in same spot as in the past - Larchmont Beach Club.
I have increased my training regimen this year, having completed an 8K continuous swim in the pool the last week of April. I will add 9K and 10K pool swims during May and June before taking to the open water.
As was the case since I have been participating, our team is named for friend and former colleague Bill Mackey who continues in remission and is going strong, nearing his seven-year anniversary of being free of cancer. Team Mackey has added inspiration this year with Team Mackey creator and former captain Tim Helms successfully defeating prostate cancer this year. As in the past, Tim intends to do the 5K swim this year.
I am sorry to say that I have friends and family members who are less fortunate in their battle with cancer. As I have done the last few years, I am also swimming in the memory of several people, including Lou Mante, a long-time friend and my best man, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer a dozen years ago when he was 47, my cousin Joe Morra lost his very short battle in 2014 at age 58 and, on the other side of the ocean, my cousin Vincenzo Musci passed three years ago at age 62.
All of the "M's" on my list share/shared common traits – very good men in word and deed, loving husbands and caring fathers and, in the case of Lou, Joe and Vincenzo, taken from their family and friends at much too young an age. It is their strength in their fight as well as the strength of their families that inspire and motivate me.
As I am fortunate to be blessed with good health, I take this challenge to help raise funds and awareness to battle this dreadful affliction. Please join me in this endeavor – be it through your good wishes/positive thoughts during my VERY early (and VERY LONG) morning training for this open water swim, through your generous donations or all of the above.
