Welcome to the Nassau-Suffolk County benefit swim chapter of Swim Across America. Since our start in 2001, SAA - Nassau/Suffolk events have raised over $8.9 million in support of our beneficiaries.
We hope you'll join us in open water in Glen Cove this August or in one of the pool swims all over Nassau and Suffolk counties this summer to "Make Waves to Fight Cancer."

Welcome to the annual Swim Across America, Sound to Cove Open Water Swim. Whether you are a returning swimmer or looking to do your first Open Water swim, we welcome you to our Swim Across America family! Choose a 0.5 mile, 1 mile, 5K, 10K or Kid's Splash swim in Long Island Sound finishing on the beach at beautiful Morgan Memorial Park in the City of Glen Cove, NY.

All swimmers raise money to support the cause, and those who feel particularly motivated to raise even more, can register as WaveMaker Swimmers. We welcome you to help us "Make Waves to Fight Cancer!"

Swim as an Individual, or on a Team:

A person may elect to swim alone, or be part of a team. Many colleagues and college alumni will form teams, or teams may be formed in honor or memory of a loved one. All teams are inspirational and rewarding for all of us involved with Swim Across America. All team members are still required to meet the individual fundraising minimum of $500.

The goal of the Swim Across America laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is to develop new approaches to cancer treatment through stimulating the immune system to attack cancer cells. Results from our laboratory are the basis of ongoing clinical trials at MSKCC in patients with melanoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer and lymphoma. The lab has been one of the most successful in the world at moving lab discoveries into the clinic. The SAA lab was instrumental in the development of the first Melanoma US FDA-approved drug in 13 years.

We have been funding the important non small cell lung cancer research of Rafaella Sordella, PhD since 2008 at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Her lab has been able to identify a subpopulation of cells that are intrinsically resistant to both conventional and targeted therapies, included Tarceva, and are more metastatic. At the molecular level they have determined that increased activation of the TGF-beta-IL-6 axis is driving all these phenotypes. Important drugs targeting teh IL-6 signaling pathway are currently available. They are now focused on seeking to understand the efficacy of these drugs in a pre-clinical model, that will hopefully lead to the development of new lung cancer clinical trials.

In 2011 we began assisting in the funding of a pediatric brain cancer project directed by Marc Symons, PhD at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of North Shore. Current therapies for the most common malignant childhood brain tumor, medulloblastoma in particular radiation therapy have long term side effects, including marked nerocognitive difficulties. Marc's lab has initiated a program to identify medulloblastoma radio-resistance genes and characterize their functions. Hopefully the identified radio-resistance genes will provide us with new drug targets for the development of more effective therapies for medulloblastoma.

Swim Across America has been funding the 'Stacey Leondis Fellowship' - research into the development of a targeted therapy for osteosarcoma, an adolescent bone cancer supervised by Dr. Richard Gorlick at Children's Hospital at Montefiore, since 2006. SAA-Nassau-Suffolk will continue funding Dr. Gorlick's research now that he is the division head and department chair of Pediatrics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all our swimming events. A Safety Director is responsible for coordinating all activities within an event, and works closely with the local Fire, Police and EMT's to ensure swimmer safety. We will have a number of lifeguards, safety kayakers and safety boats out on the course with us to ensure swimmer safety at all times. All boats are able to communicate via both hand held and ship to shore radios. All swimmers are required to follow specific procedures to participate in the event. These procedures are designed to protect swimmers from injury and will be enforced by the Safety Director.
