I am an avid open-water swimmer, and a long-time member of "The West Neck Pod," a group of swimmers who swim regularly in the waters of Cold Spring Harbor and Long Island Sound. On Saturday, August 5th, I will again be joining my Pod-mates as members of "Team West Neck Pod" in the 2017 "Sound-to-Cove" Swim Across America, an annual event that raises funds for local cancer research organizations -- including our neighbor across the harbor, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories.
My own family, my Pod-family, and my work-family have all been touched by cancer, and my ever-growing "personal circle" of cancer survivors and victims includes my father, three of my grandparents, my aunt, my cousin, many of my friends, Pod-mates and pool-mates, and numerous colleagues and co-workers.
On August 5th, I will be swimming in solidarity with all of these survivors and in loving memory of those who lost their battle with this devastating disease -- including, most recently, my dear friend Karin Ralph, who died of lung cancer in April at the age of 71. If you and yours have also been touched by cancer, please consider making a donation in support of my "Swim Across America," and I promise to swim my heart out on August 5th!
As always, I will be swimming in loving memory of my "Ol'Ma," Virginia Moore, who died on June 25th, 2015 and who was so proud of her swimmer-daughter...This year, I also swim in honor of my courageous and outrageous friend and colleague Thomas Whelan; and in honor of my friend and colleague Captain Tony DeLise and his family, who lost their beautiful daughter Denise DeLise to ovarian cancer last year; and in loving memory of my dear, dear friend Karin, whose light will continue to shine forever....
* Two years ago I adopted fellow "Team West Neck Pod" member Gae Polisner's innovation of writing the names of donors' loved ones on the swimmers' flotation buoys our Team members tow while we swim....It is a wonderful way for donors to commemorate their friends and family members and for us swimmers to be reminded thoughout our swim of why we do this, and for whom....If you have someone whom you would like to commemorate in this way, please let me know when you donate and I will add their name to my "floaty-bag" and their spirit to my swim....
