Our Answer To Cancer

Dear Friends and Family,

Team Our Answer To Cancer was formed a few years ago by combining Team SAAVE and Team EMC SAAVE, who have participated in this event since its inception. We came up with this combined team name because it defines our mission, which is to come together and raise as much money as we can to help fund the necessary research and treatment priorities to cure Cancer….”Our Answer To Cancer”.

Kevin Shine asked me to participate in this event back in 2003 when my brother Paul was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma, which metastasized to his liver in 2008 and he passed away in 2010. I lead this team in memory of my brother Paul. I also lead this team in memory of dear friends John O’Hara, who passed away 3 years ago from Cancer and most recently Dick Strom, who passed away on May 29, 2016 from Cancer.  In addition, I lead this team in memory of Valerie Esposito who passed away in 2015 from Metastatic Melanoma after being treated by Dr. Jedd Wolchok at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) for almost a decade!

I also lead this team in honor of my sister Jo Ann DiMaso, a 3-time Cancer survivor having beaten Hodgkin’s, Breast and Lung Cancer, who diagnosed earlier this year with Lepto Meningial Disease, which is metastatic cancer to the meninges surrounding the brain and spine. Jo Ann completed brain radiation and is currently receiving Immunotherapy treatments at MSK. She has a tough battle but know her strength, determination, courage and FAITH will carry her through! I also lead this team in honor of my Brother-in-Law Richie Magnussen, who is currently battling Small Intestine Cancer and being treated at MSK as well.  Finally, my Father-in-Law Tom Murn, who passed away on July 19th, was a two-time Cancer survivor. Dad was a fighter having dealt with many health issues but was the most gentle, kind and loving man I knew. He will truly be missed having been a huge part of my life, especially over the past several years while he lived with Terry and I.

The folks above are "WHY I SWIM" however, each of us have our own reasons to participate. This is an incredibly worthy fundraising event and we are thankful to be a part of it. Please help our cause by joining our team as a swimmer, volunteer or make a secure online donation on our website.  There is no better way to honor or memorialize your loved ones as the proceeds go directly to Cancer Research & Treatment Priorities at MSK, Mercy Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, Feinstein Institute at LIJ, Cold Spring Harbor Labs and Fighting Chance!

Thank you,

Jim Sirignano
