It has been a year since the last Swim Across America fundraising and awareness campaign. I’m excited that my brothers, nephews, sister-in-laws and I have once again joined under the banner of Team Susan Survives to help bring dollars and awareness in support of cancer research, prevention and treatment. Our Team Captain Susan Helmrich is an inspiration to us and is marking her 40th year since her first bout with cancer. Over the past few years participating in the San Francisco Bay Area Swim Across America has become a family event. It gives me a chance to fight as hard as I can against a disease that has challenged so many of my friends, coworkers and family. Last year the Bay Area Swim gifted over half a million dollars to local beneficiary programs. This is a fantastic effort. This year my nephews are once again traveling from Colorado to participate in our family fundraising effort. My nephews Nick (age 16) and Jake (age 13) will join their father Dave, their step-mom Joanie, their Aunt Kathryn and my brother Steve in swimming under the Golden Gate Bridge. I’ll travel to the bay area once again and help provide for the massive shore side support effort with my sister-in-law Janis to ensure the event swimmers have a safe day on the water and. I invite you to learn more about this fantastic program and get inspired by my family’s participation! I couldn't be more proud of my two brothers and my nephews and sister-in-laws. This is also great opportunity to help my nephews learn about compassion, generosity, and working together for a larger goal than any one of us can complete alone. I hope you’ll help me teach that lesson to Nick and Jake.
2017 will mark the 12th year of the Bay Area Swim Across America event. Proceeds from the swim will support cancer research and patient recovery at our two local beneficiary programs: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco Survivors of Childhood Cancer Program. In 2016, thanks to the generosity of our participants, SAA - SF Bay Area gifted $550,000 to these programs.. These beneficiaries recognize our funding source as instrumental to their success. Without Swim Across America, much of their research would be left with no monetary support.
