Dear friends/liebe Freunde
Last year, I participated in SwimmAcrossAmerica for the first time as a Rookie (a newcomer). The preparation of 7 weeks consisted of a large number of lapse trainings in a public swimming pool and a few additional open water trainings in the pacific ocean in San Francisco. My initial fear, insecurity and doubt was slowly replaced by a sense of community, fullfilment and excitement. A week before the event, my swim peers convinced me to try the 1,5 miles swim (instead of the shorter 0,5 miles distance) which would allow me to jump in the water right under the golden gate bridge. The stories shared by cancer survivors during our ride on the boat to the bridge at 6am in the morning were overwhelming and deeply touching. The jump in the water after the ride, the swim in the open pacific ocean surrounded by hundreds of other swimmers and the sense of achievement after arriving at the border one hour later was amazing.
After having participated as a Rookie last year, I was asked to step in for Terry as the Team Captain for Genentech in 2017. It is my honor to represent our company for this good cause I do hope that many collegues join me and many friends support me in our contribution to cancer research for children. I deeply thank you for your support! Detlef
