Our team is swimming for Louie Jose Bonpua's brother, who was taken from us all too soon. Also, for Jose's brother-in-law, Jack Kerstetter, who just entered hospice for prostate cancer. Many of us have lost someone to cancer. Fifteen years ago Jose's brother, Louie, passed due to leukemia. Ten years before Louie’s passing, his grandmother succumbed to breast cancer. Today, his brother-in-law, Jack, is preparing for end-of-life due to prostate cancer. We are both loath to think that there are many others, friends or relatives, who are dear to me also fighting against cancer.
On August 30th, Jose, spent time with family as they observed Louie’s birthday. They also watched the video (please see link below) his brother made before he left, as he normally does when he thinks of him. At the end of the video, he said, “Continue to carry the torch to find a cure.” Jose has thought of what he said but never really took action until he was given the opportunity to raise awareness and to raise money to fight cancer.
Please take a few minutes to watch this Louie video Louie created before he passed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYzkmDTdmXg
I'm hoping that friends, old and new, from near and far will join me and Team Louie to raise money for cancer research. It's for a great cause, it's a great challenge, and it's a way to give back. As NIH and other government funds are harder and harder get, non-profits like Swim Across America, are desperately needed to fill in the funding gaps.
So please join Team Louie, volunteer, or donate and help us help Swim Across America find a cure. You can be sure that 80 cents of every dollar will go directly to research or support services here in the Bay Area to our local beneficiaries, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in SF and Oakland. In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the San Francisco Bay Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as we can. Please support us by sponsoring our swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
