Sunday, April 30, 2017 is the fifth annual SMAC Out Cancer event at San Mateo Athletic Club on the campus of College of San Mateo. Last year, thanks to many of you, I was the top individual fundraiser for this incredble cause and hope to beat my record this year! I am volunteering for the fifth time in the name of the same extraordinary woman, my Mom, Mary Ann Bauer, who died of small cell lung cancer on June 23, 2000 when she was just 55 years old. I am also continuing to volunteer for my friend and colleague, District Deputy Chancellor Jim Keller, who died of glioblastoma on January 23, 2016 and for my Aunt Lisa who died on March 20, 2016 of an agressive cancer so young leaving behind many who love her.
This year, I am also volunteering for another dear friend, President Emeritus of Cañada College and now President of the District Board of Trustees Tom Mohr. Tom underwent life saving surgery in his battle against pancreatic cancer last year that put the cancer into remission. But Tom continues to take active measures to keep the cancer at bay. He was recently reflecting on the state of the art care and treatment he has received in this battle. Many of the protocols from whch he benefits come as a result of research the likes of which Swim Across America funds to help children in their own battles against cancer. I asked Tom if I could share this with you in order to help in this life saving campaign.
Each of these extraordinary people has had a profound impact on my life. All of us involved in this effort are volunteeing to make a difference and that difference can be seen in the lives of the children who are saved as a result of this critically important research and the care these children get right here at Children's Hospital in Oakland and UC San Francisco. This is your opportunity to join us and take that one action that will change the world for children fighting these horrific cancers.
You can make a credit card donation here by clicking on the box that says "DONATE" on the upper right hand side of this page, or send a check to Swim Across America referencing Thomas Bauer as the swimmer/volunteer. Every dime of what we raise goes directly to fight children's cancer at Children's Hospital Oakland and UC San Francisco Hospital. Thank you so much for your support of this incredible cause in the name of an incredible lady. Your support supports the ground breaking research of the doctors who fight to find treatments and cures for cancers every day and really does save lives!
Love, Tom, Tommy, Tommy John, TJ
