Dear Friends and Family,
Ugh...I've gotta be honest with you, cancer sucks!
Two of my honorees from last year's swim, Emily's step mom Sue and my ex co-worker Shawn, lost their battles with cancer :-(
Thankfully my Parks volunteer friend Avis is winning her fight!
The frightening fact is that in our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. So it is likely that someone close to us will be impacted.
I'm dedicating this year's SMAC Out Cancer Pool Swim to all of our impacted loved ones, and raising as much money as possible to fight this terrible disease.
Last year you were SO AWESOME - donating over $3000! This year has been EVEN...MORE...AMAZING - we're over $4000 raised :) :) :) Wow!!
100% of your tax deductible donations will again go directly to the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital SF and Oakland to further their important cancer research, treatment and prevention programs!
At a recent UCSF Benioff SF Children's Hospital tour, Dr Goldsby shared how our initial funding 5 years ago started their now nationally recognized Children's Cancer Survivorship Program. His long term dream is that this program expands to include adult cancer and bone marrow transplant patients, as they also require similar life-long health and treatment care.
His UCSF Benioff Oakland Cancer Research Institute peer, Dr Saba, leads a team focusing exclusively on pediatric cancer research (sadly she is fighting cancer herself). I'm hoping to visit the Oakland facility next year, so that I can share some first hand details about their important work.
Half of your donations go to Dr Saba's pediatric cancer research efforts, the other half to Dr Goldsby's pediatric cancer survivor's program.
One final important note: Dr Goldsby told us that State funding has dried up to near zero, and federal NIH funding is at risk of being reduced significantly this year!
Please help support these important efforts by making a tax deductible donation to my personal fundraising page. Every dollar helps and makes a difference in the fight to find a cure.
Thank You All So Much :)
