Ill never forget the day that I I got the phone call from the doctor. “I’m so sorry, but the test results came back positive. You have in situ ductal carcinoma. Breast cancer. It’s high grade.” So, I’m like “OK, thanks doc.” Wait. WHAT…..?????? Did I hear that right??? Somehow, I thought that I would have heard something different. That it was all just routine testing and all is good. Come back in 6 months. Oh no! My world, as I knew it, was turned upside down. How could this happen? I take care of myself. I exercise regularly. I may not eat the best, but I don’t eat a lot of junk food. I’m not overweight. Oh no! What do you mean I need to go see all these doctors and get all these tests done? I don’t have time for this. I have plans. I have things to do…….
So, I took the fact that I have breast cancer and embraced it, and did the only thing that I know how to do…... Keep on living life!! Six weeks after learning the news of my cancer, I had a bilateral mastectomy. That’s right. My breasts were amputated. A part of my body that was determined to be bad was removed and gone. Forever. My body will never be the same. But who cares? I am alive! And thankfully, I got off easy. No treatments. No medications. All caught and removed. Whew!
So, as my world was turned upside down, I was vulnerable. Yet I had to be strong. I had to look inside myself and do whatever needed to be done. It brought me down. I had to rebuild, not only the outside but the inside as well. And I did, and continue to do so. Continuing to live, for today and tomorrow. The only way I know how to do it. And that is by being adventurous and exploring new opportunities. Which provides the chances and opportunities for love, life and happiness. I’m thankful everyday for those battle scars, inside and out, as they have made me who I am today.
Don’t care what other people say
Just follow your own way
Don’t give up and use the chance
To return to innocence
