Seattle Open Water Swim

Saturday, September 6th, 2014

Thank you to everyone who came out for our annual Seattle Swim! We had a great day on Mercer Island with gorgeous weather! Together we helped raise over $200,000 for Seattle Cancer Care Alliance!

Join swimmers of all ages and skill levels for the SAA - Seattle Open Water Swim in beautiful Lake Washington. Choose either the 1/2 mile, NEW 1 mile or 2 mile option.

Proceeds from the swim will support cancer research, prevention and treatment at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

All swimmers raise money to support the cause, and those who feel particularly motivated to raise even more, can register as WaveMaker Swimmers. We welcome you to help us "Make Waves to Fight Cancer!"

Results are in!

Safety

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all our swimming events. Our Safety Director is responsible for coordinating all activities within the event, and will work closely with both local Police and Coast Guard representatives to ensure swimmer safety. We will have the Mercer Island Police Marine Patrol out on the course with us, as well as a number of lifeguards, safety kayakers and safety boats to ensure swimmer safety at all times. All boats will be able to communicate via both hand held and ship to shore radios. All swimmers are required to follow specific procedures to participate in the event. These procedures are designed to protect swimmers from injury and will be enforced by the event’s Safety Director.

Event Day Details

Check In

We have over 260 swimmers to check in so please arrive promptly at 6:00am if you are a 2 mile swimmer, and 7:00am if you are a 1/2 mile or 1 mile swimmer. At check in you will be given a packet with a timing chip (attach to your ankle), a cap, and a plastic bag with your chip # on it. Hang on to your bag. You will then go through our body marking station, t-shirt and journal pick up, and don't forget to fill out a Why I Swim flag to be hung at the finish line. If you are a 2-mile swimmer, use the plastic bag with your number on it from check in to store the personal items (clothing, etc.) that you bring with you when bussed to the start of the swim. Our volunteers will bring these bags back to Luther Burbank Beach for the finish. If you are swimming the 1/2 mile or 1 mile then you can use the plastic bag to store your belongings. There will be a designated area at the swim beach for bag pick up.
What to Bring

To ease the registration process, please have your waiver form completed. It is required in order to swim on Saturday. Please fill it out LEGIBLY and COMPLETELY and bring it with you.

Fundraising

Thanks to all of you for your fabulous efforts so far! We have already raised a lot of money and we're not done yet! Just a reminder... all swimmers must have raised at least $300 by Saturday in order to swim. If you do not see someone you know has sponsored you, they may have forgotten to indicate on the check who the money was to go to.  If this happens, feel free to email me (david@swimacrossamerica.org) and I will look them up and determine if I have received the check.

Safety Instructions

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all SAA swimming events. The swim course is up on the website - please take a moment to review it. We have boats and kayaks, lifeguards, marine police boats, EMTs and an ambulance ready to take care of us!

Please hydrate well before the swim as water temperatures are 72 degrees and warmer. If, for some reason you need assistance on the water, take your bathing cap off and wave it in the air.  A kayaker will come to you and give you assistance - each kayaker will have "noodles" that you can hold onto while you rest.  WHEN YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE PLEASE CHECK OUT WITH OUR SWIMMER COUNTERS AND HAVE YOUR TIMING CHIP REMOVED. DO NOT ABANDON THE RACE COURSE.

Parking

Please use the Mercer Island Park and Ride parking lot for parking after North and South Lots of Luther Burbank Park are full. MI Community Center lot is only open to the community center. On water safety volunteers park on the street and in the upper lot of Mercerwood Shore Club; you may load your boats via the Mercerwood Shore Club boat ramp.

Weather

Forecast is for a high of 83 degrees with lows of 55 degrees.  So the morning could be brisk but warming up during the event.  Should inclement weather decide to roll in for Saturday and we need to cancel the event, we will do so via email by 5:00 am on Saturday. So if it looks questionable and stormy, please check your email for notice.
Weather Note: If there are unsafe conditions we will alter the swim plan, including the start. This will be decided on the day of the event. For thunder and lightning, we will hold the swim starts by 30 minutes, for a maximum of 1hr 30mins, at which time the swim will be cancelled. There will be  no alternate date.
