It is with a heavy heart that Swim Across America shares the passing of “Amazing” Grace Bunke on Sunday, March 25th. While her home has been SAA—Atlanta, Grace’s influence knew no boundaries. She inspired everyone who met her. Olympians worldwide offered personal messages of encouragement to Grace, and Olympian Amanda Weir ceremonially swam a 50-free in her place in the Georgia State games when Grace wasn’t physically able to participate.

Grace was the top SAA—Atlanta fundraiser in 2017 for the doctors that treated her at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. One of Grace’s final wishes was that she be the top national fundraiser for Swim Across America in 2018. Even in passing, Grace refuses to let cancer win. You can read her own words and donate to Grace through her personal page.

Through sharing this message, Swim Across America is honoring Grace’s values as a selfless teenager, champion swimmer and courageous fighter. Grace’s favorite quote was the following: “Prayer is asking for rain. Faith is bringing the umbrella.” We hope everyone at the SAA—Atlanta swim on September 22nd will open a red umbrella in tribute to Grace.

Please take a moment and listen to the message Grace shared at SAA—Atlanta.
