Hi! I’m Abby McCulloh and this year I’m serving on the Junior Advisory Board for SAA. I am going to be participating in a 5K at Lake Lanier in the Swim Across America - Atlanta Open Water Swim and raising as much money as I can to fight cancer.
Swim Across America - Atlanta benefits The AFLAC Cancer and Blood Disorder Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, one of the top pediatric cancer centers in the USA, which cares for more than 6,500 children each year.
Pediatric cancer research gets approximately 4% of all government funded cancer research funding. Pediatric cancer research relies heavily on gifts and contributions. Americans spend more on Starbucks in 3 days than all the funds the government granted to children’s cancer research all year.
We are going into the 7th year of SAA in Atlanta and as of last year we have raised $1.7M for children’s cancer research.
An oversimplification of the issue specific to kids is that traditional chemo has side effects that are particularly difficult for children to tolerate. Most chemo is non targeted medication that attacks rapidly dividing and growing cells such as hair follicles and digestive lining, which is also true for most of the cells in a growing child.
The specific project that we have funded is headed by Dr. Graham and Dr. DeRyckere. Their most promising therapy uses a drug that targets an enzyme which they believe will destroy cancer cells by reprogramming immune cells to target cancer cells. There is currently a solid tumor trial and AML (Accute Myeloid Leukemia) will come next. Leukemia is the most common form of childhood cancer. It is difficult to get any drug to trial, but it is particularly difficult for treatments for children.
We have helped get this drug to trial. This is a massive step. We don’t just want to prolong survival- we want to find a cure. You are making a difference. Please donate - check to see if your company will match charitable donations. Donate in honor of someone who has fought this fight. Feel free to donate anonymously. Anything helps - any amount. Spread the word. We can make a difference together.
Swim Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization - all donations are tax deductible. If you have any questions about the charity organization we are happy to answer any questions. We were curious how much of our money makes it to do the actual work.
After expenses, SAA strives to award 70 to 85% of gross revenue from the swim as a grant to our beneficiaries. SAA’s tax returns and audited financials can be found on this page.
Sept 28, 2019 please come out to Lake Lanier Islands / Margaritaville and experience the event with us. Come to support children battling cancer, for survivors, come in memory of loved ones lost. We expect 600-700 swimmers in distances up to a 5k. 200 volunteers. It’s an amazing event.
You can make a credit card donation here, or send a check to:
