The first year that I swam with the Baltimore swim, it took many attempts to write this page. My mom, Cristy, had been fighting a neverending battle with cancer for nearly 2 years when Sammy, Emma, Trevor and I decided to start Team Rock On in her honor. I choked through a few sentences about my mom's sudden diagnosis and how strong she was, and started inviting people to sign up. I was sitting with her at Johns Hopkins when my email started blowing up with registrations. She was amazed at how many of our friends initially joined the team--I was amazed she didn't realize how many people she had welcomed into our home for a meal, a night, or even an entire summer! She was a mother to anyone who we brought home, and all of those people immediately joined Team Rock On to show their support for her.
A few months later, 4 months before Team Rock On's debut, my mom passed away. Recording my family's story on this page that first year brought tears to my eyes and took several attempts to complete. But now, Team Rock On's fourth year at the Baltimore Open Water Swim, it is finally starting to get easier. Participating in Swim Across America has become a lively and wonderful celebration of my mom's life that I look forward to every year. The fact that my friends continue to return and keep Team Rock On at the top of the fundraising list is something I am incredibly proud of, and hope will carry on for years to come. Together, I hope that we can support cancer research until we find a cure! Please consider donating in order to find new treatments for patients like my mom!
