12 years in a row! Still fighting cancer one stroke at a time! While many of our planned events and normal activities have been placed on hold, cancer has not. Every 15 minutes, 50 Americans are told “you have cancer”. Even though we can’t swim together in the Boston Harbor this summer, our mission does not stop! I am even more committed this year to support Swim Across America to raise funds for cancer researchers at MGH for Child Cancer Center and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This year we are participating in the Coast to Coast Challenge and we will be logging activity miles to help our team make the 7.686-mile journey across America. I am pledging to swim a minimum of 22 miles each month this summer – the length of our normal relay in the Boston Harbor.
As most of you know by now, I started this swim in 2009 because my grandmother passed away in 2000 from renal cancer and 8 years later I lost two very special people to me, my friend Jeff Dropo and my second mom, Mrs. Worth. I never imagined how many people I knew would be stricken by the nasty “C” after taking that initial plunge into the Harbor including one of the most important people in my life -my mom. By now, you have come to know how important this event is for me. Despite all of the hard work by great researchers and medical professionals, my list for whom I swim has grown greatly in just the last 12 years. I will continue to swim for all those battling cancer until a cure is found! I am happy to report that Richie, my friend for whom I swam last year, kicked cancers butt and is back rocking it in the ocean. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky and so I swim for those that have lost the battle to this terrible disease: my Mamere, Uncle Bob, Micki Harris, Ed Colbert, Jeff Dropo, Rick Starkweather, Mrs. Worth, Mr. Vehlow, Mr. Smith, Mr. Gallo, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, Cliff H, Mr. Humphries, Bonnie B, Mr. Healy and Jeff Houston. This year I have dedicated my swim to a mentor and lifelong friend- my first coach when I moved to Andover- Marilyn Fitzgerald. Mrs Fitz is battling the big C for the 4th time but she had a huge support system and we know cancer has no chance with her. I also swim for all those that are currently undergoing treatment and those that have survived the big C: Tammy S, Sherri H, Kitty, Aunt Sandy, Aunt Gerry, Laura S, Gerriann S, Kathy G, Joel F, Kelly A, John M, Marilyn F, Kristin M, Michael M, B Joyce L, Barbara M, Jan D, Linda M, Gail H, Craig F, Maria P, Bob C, Cathy B, Ann B, Ellen W, Jack W, Cheryl K, Chuck C, and of course my mom who is now celebrating 10 years’ cancer free!!
If you are able, please support me by making a donation. Each donation received adds miles to our journey and every bit counts.
Want to join in the fun? This year you can join our team without a fundraising commitment. Join our team, Team Goldman and Friends, and make the journey across the country with me! All that is required is a $25 registration fee and then you can log activity miles with me. You do not need to swim- miles can be from walking, running, biking, or any activity you do (tennis, boxing, or even gardening). Register here https://www.swimacrossamerica.org/site/TR?fr_id=5522&pg=entry and be sure to join Team Goldman and Friend’s to help our team’s journey.
Thank you for your continuous support!
