THE MISSION DOESN'T STOP. Cancer doesn't quarantine. That's why Covid-19 isn't stopping us!
In place of the Boston Harbor Swim, I am participating in the Coast to Coast Challenge. For each hour of activity I complete, I earn miles to help Team Boston "swim" across America!
In January 2018, my spouse, Rick Osterberg, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. After 18 months of remission, a routine follow-up scan in June 2020 found a small new tumor located a few inches above the site of the original tumor. Because it was caught early, the doctors are still treating this recurrence to cure it. That is great news! Unfortunately, treatment with curative intent means repeating the line-up of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery that he underwent in 2018, a line-up that feels daunting right now.
While we are going through a challenging time, it brings us joy to make something good (research) out of something bad (cancer). The money we raise will help others survive cancer and cope with the side effects of treatment.
Rick and I were committed to Swim Across America before he was diagnosed. Because of Rick's diagnosis, our commitments are more personal.
Please keep Swim Across America on your list this year and, if you are able, sponsor me and the Boston Coast to Coast team.
Or join us! For $25, you can register for the Boston event. You will get a t-shirt -- and there is no fundraising minimum! TO JOIN, visit swimacrossamerica.org/boston and click the "REGISTER" button.
The Boston-area SAA events benefit quality-of-life research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and pediatric oncology research at the Mass General Hospital for Children Cancer Center.
Please support me by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity. It will lead to better treatment for cancer patients and cancer survivors!
