These are the words my niece, Nina Luker uses to talk about the challenges we face on our planet, in our communities, and within our own bodies today. She continues to say these words because they resonate with her immediate challenge of living with and receiving treatment for Stage 4 Lymphoma. Nina is a 24-year-old Div. I athlete (rowing, UNC) who is currently on leave from her marketing job in New York City.
Nina is why.
Cancer is not in quarantine. It prevails. It causes emotional & physical havoc. It tests even the bravest souls. With "unwavering hope", we continue to make progress in our fight against this disease.
When my brother told me about Nina, and about the medicine she is receiving to help rid her body of Lymphoma, my very first reaction was THIS is exactly why I participate in Swim Across America. Over the last 25 years, I have been fundraising for cancer research so that the imagination, curiosity, and passion our cancer specialists have to their core can be unleased to develop better and better medicines.
This year our mission with Swim Across America is a little bit different but carries with it the same passion. Essentially, we want more of you participating with less focus on dollar amounts. In addition, instead of actually swimming with my team in the Boston Harbor, our Team Goldman is virtually swimming across the continent by submitting hours we spend on an activity (pretty much anything: dancing with a hula-hoop, playing frisbee golf, ocean swimming…) which translates into miles across the country (1 hour = 3 mile).
The BEST part is that you can participate, too. Our focus is the bring AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE into the fold. You can help us add up miles just by registering ($25) ($1=1mile). Once registered, you can log your activity to add miles to our “swim” across America. You’ll get a once in a lifetime t-shirt, and you’ll be on our TEAM!
The Boston-area SAA events benefit quality-of-life research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and pediatric oncology research at the Mass General Hospital for Children Cancer Center.
You can make a credit card donation by clicking on the "Donate Now" button shown in the right sidebar of this page, or you can send a check to Swim Across America - Boston, c/o Jamie Mannion, PO Box 206, 300 Broadway Lbby, Revere, MA 02151.
Check should be made out to Swim Across America but please include a note mentioning my name as the swimmer you are supporting!
