It’s that time again- I’m asking for your support for the swims I will be doing with Swim Across America this year. Last year I was unable to attend the Chicago Swim Across America event. I’m happy to announce Houston's inaugural Swim Across America event on May 4th was a huge success. I swam and Team It's Better with Bacon was there in force with about a dozen volunteers.
On August 10th its off to Chicago to swim again. I plan on swimming the 5k. I might have the honor to be an angel swimmer again helping less experienced swimmers achieve their goals but will have to wait and see on that.
Why am I doing this you ask?
Well each year the list seems to grow and quite honestly it is getting old. It seems each year yet another friend or family member is diagnosed with cancer or succumbs to their disease. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since my Mom lost her battle to pancreatic cancer. Since then 3 of my aunts, 2 of my uncles and a few friends have all succumbed to their disease. Uncle Fritz, who passed earlier this year was the latest to pass too soon from cancer. I continue to swim to honor those who have battled cancer and survived, as well as those we have lost to this horrible disease. I swim for Swim Across America as they provide research grants to promising research to work towards a cure. We have seen family, friends and patients struggle through their cancer treatment and fight to live while some have not made it. It’s awful. I miss my family, and it hurts watching each one go through the pain and suffering to beat their disease. It is my wish to eliminate cancer altogether. So please donate. Since the first swim in 1987 Swim Across America has granted over 80 million dollars in research funds. This success only continues if you donate so please consider.
In closing I wanted to dispel the myth. The Team Name of “It's Better with Bacon”. While we all know that everything does taste better with bacon, the Bacon referenced here is a little different. Bacon is my niece’s surname and this is better when we get to swim together. Not sure how that will work out this year as she graduates and will be off to college somewhere but, if we can, we will as she is also passionate about raising money to fight cancer. So please donate.
If you are in town, the swim is August 10th in Chicago at Ohio Street Beach which is just slightly north of Navy Pier.
Thank you for your support,

Check should be made out to Swim Across America but please include a note mentioning my name as the swimmer you are supporting!
