Carol Rooney Carter took on open water swimming specifically to raise money for cancer research through Swim Across America. She swam this event several times in Chicago and San Francisco in honor of family members. She swam with an enthusiasm that was evident to all around her - no matter the weather. Her constant smile and warm personality endeared her to all. We miss her more than words can describe.
Carol was strong and completely asymptomatic when diagnosed. She was training for an exciting season of open water events including an invitation to swim Sandycove Island in Ireland. Routine blood tests revealed a blood cancer called myelodysplasia syndrome (MDS). Ever the optimist, Carol took the news head on and never let on how how serious it was. She focused on the positives as they came: being covered by insurance; preparing a germ free house for recovery from a compromised immune system, and finding a strong match for a bone marrow donor.
Following her transplant, she bravely fought an arduous battle that was filled setbacks but she overcame them one by one with her determination. She never stopped fighting "to kick cancer's butt" but ultimately, 155 days after the transplant we lost her to complications from the treatment.
Friends and family now carry on the tradition to support this important cause that was so important to Carol. This year is the 11th consecutive year (and 17th event) that TEAM CAROL has raised proceeds for cancer research. Please consider supporting one of the team members - no amount is too small. Even better, we would love for others to join Team Carol in Lake Michigan on August 10th.
In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the Chicago Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as we can. Please support us by sponsoring our swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure.
Swim Across America, Inc., [SAA] is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming- related events. With the help of hundreds of volunteers nationwide and past and current Olympians, SAA is helping find a cure for cancer through athleticism, community outreach and direct service.
