Dear Friends and Family!
If you have found your way to this web page then you know that it is time for Swim Across America! More than 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Chances are you or a family member has already been affected by cancer as I know I have been personally effected, and my family has been effected by cancer: this year my sister, cousin, and I are all survivors!
It has now been a solid 5 years since I started participating in this event! I can't imagine not doing it. I've challenged my self over the last few years with things like raising more money than last or increasing my distance. This year is about just being in the water and getting it done. My goal is to be able to swim in Swim Across America and recruit some awesome swimmers and volunteers this year. And raise some money for a good cause, of course.
My "why I swim" this year is for myself. I will always be thinking about the people that I have swam in honor of in the past. However, this year has been a struggle for me-mentally and physically. I’ve experienced a debilitating depression for most of this year. Swimming is one way I’ve learned to stabilize my mood, but with a injured shoulder, I’ve had one less tool in my box to help manage my depression. I injured my shoulder and spent the first third of this year out of the pool and at the PT's office. The last few months have been a slow re-entry into the water so I can be here and healthy for September 2019!
The facts about Swim Across America:
The money you donate stays local and is donated to the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Baylor Scott and White. It goes towards innovative clinical trials focusing on treating cancers that have resisted standard therapies. Please help me make an impact in the fight to find a cure by making a tax free contribution to support my swim. Your donation will help fund phase 1 clinical trials at the Swim Across America Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
Please check out the "Scrubbing In" blog written a couple of years ago for Baylor Scott and White, about how I got involved in SAA. http://scrubbing.in/together-sisters-fight-rare-thyroid-cancer/
