In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. I joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. I am challenging myself by swimming in the SAA - Motor City Mile and raising as much money to fight cancer as I can. Please support me by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure.
I am very excited to be a part of this event for many reasons. I am going to be swimming for those close to me who have been affected by cancer, with one person in particular on my mind as I prepare for and take on this challenge, my good friend Dana Leahy Janssen. Dana took on the challenge of cancer with grace and optimism, but ultimately, her body decided it was time to join David Bowie and Prince (her favorites) in the sky, a little over a year ago. I miss her wisdom and her geniune coolness, but I know that she is around.
I am also really excited to get back in the water and take on this new adventure of open water swimming! I will be preparing and swimming the one mile with my co-worker at the Rogel Cancer Center, Kristin Van Raaphorst. Both of us have swum competitively in the past, but she has gone further than high school swimming and swam in college and has also coached. I may be a little intimidated by her experience at first, but I will get over it, because I am truly looking forward to having her as a partner and, no doubt, a teacher in open water swimming.
Finally, I am excited to be representing the Rogel Cancer Center during this swim. I am proud to be a part of an institution that has such an impact on the lives of individuals, their friends, and families. As an administrative assistant to the Chief Administrative Officer of the Rogel Cancer Center, I am in awe of the brilliant and compassionate minds that I encounter on a daily basis. Although I may not understand the scientific speak during seminars and presentations, it is humbling to be a witness to cancer research in action. My younger self would never have guessed that I would end up working at a cancer center, but I am so grateful that I am here. I thank you for your kind donations to support me and my swim as well as to help further cancer research.
