The Rogel Cancer Center continues to be grateful of Swim Across America and all of those who put energy into supporting its mission. All money raised through Swim Across America goes directly to the Rogel Cancer Center and is distributed through a competitive grant process. 

Since 2019, four Rogel Cancer Center researchers have been awarded SAA grants to further their cancer research. With the funds raised from the inaugural 2019 SAA - Motor City Mile swim, Kyoung Eun Lee, PhD, was named the 2020 SAA - MCM grant recipient and has been able to advance her pancreatic cancer research (read about Dr. Lee's research: https://t.ly/8gfm). In addition to swimming for Team Rogel, Phillip Palmbos, MD, PhD, was named the 2021 SAA - MCM grant recipient and has been able to expand his bladder cancer research (read about Dr. Palmbos' research: https://t.ly/PYj6). 

Angel Qin, MD, was awarded the 2022 SAA - MCM grant. A lung cancer physician and researcher, Dr. Qin's research explores the interactions in the tumor microenvironment of metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, and whether these interactions can predict a response of resistance to therapy. The funds will allow Dr. Qin to delve deeper into this idea in the hopes of better targeting lung cancer treatment in the future. 

The 2023 SAA - MCM grant was awarded to Calista Harbaugh, MD. Dr. Harbaugh received $75,000 to strengthen her research titled, "No Cancer Left Behind: Preventing Positive Margins after Colorectal Cancer Surgery in Michigan."

The grant process is currently taking place to name an awardee of the 2023 SAA - MCM funds.
