Everyone has a story about someone who they know who has been affected by cancer. Everyone who has a story also has a common goal: to put an end to cancer.
I still can't believe this is going to be our 11th year swimming in this awesome event! There are many reasons I love swimming the Greenwich/Stamford swim, the atmosphere is amazing, the people are great and you're rasising money for an incrediable cause.
In October 2009 when I found out my mom Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer I immediately knew that it was going to be a tough and long journey for her and our family. What I also knew was that my mom was going to be okay in the end because she is a fighter and the strongest person I have ever met. Thankfully I was correct with my prediction and she survived an experience that no one should have to go through.
About a year later I learned my Uncle Chris- the most easy going, laid back, incredible guy - had a brain tumor that was cancerous. His journey was long and hard fought. He never felt that cancer could take the life out of him. He made the most of everyday here on earth and never gave up hope. Uncle Chris passed away in October 2011.
We also swim to remember Kelly Devine. Kelly - our family friend and my swim coach who passed away suddenly 3 years ago. Kelly was a consistant supporter of SAA and came to many of our swims to cheer the team on. For Kelly - CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS, CAN'T LOSE.
Seeing my loved ones battle such an awful disease I felt the need to do something. What could I do? Swim! Participating in SWIM Across America is a step to helping find a cure to end cancer.
Please help put an end to this word "cancer" and donate what you can to me or my team – Kicking Cancer for Karen, Chris and Friends. Thank you!!
In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. I joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. I am challenging myself by swimming in the Greenwich - Stamford Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as I can. Please support me by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
