Even during a pandemic, people continue to hear the terrible words ‘you have cancer’. As a matter of fact, every 15 min, 50 Americans are diagnosed with cancer. That statistic hit close to home in December 2011 when we learned that my Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. Fortunately, they caught it early enough that they could remove it with surgery and as result she didn't need radiation or chemotherapy. We felt so blessed that Mom was cancer free. On June 30, 2012, in honor of my Mom, I participated in my first 1.5 mile swim with the Stamford-Greenwich Swim Across America. It was such a special day, and was made even more special with my family (including my Mom) cheering me on. From that moment, I knew I had to continue to swim in this incredible event each and every year possible and Mom has made each & every one.
We thought Mom made it to the 5 year milestone cancer free. Unfortunately that wasn't the case; in the fall of 2018, we learned that they found another cancerous spot on her lung. This time she received radiation. Once again she has fought through. She is an incredibly strong woman and she is the reason why once again, I am joining the Swim Across America family so that I can continue to give cancer patients hope by raising funds to support cutting edge cancer research.
Since cancer doesn't stop for the pandemic, neither should we. Although we can't come together for an open swim this year, Swim Across America is encouraging its participants to create their own personal challenge. I've decided to walk the equivalent of a Marathon each week (@ 3.74 miles a day) for four weeks. At the end of the month, I will have walked 104.8 miles to support Swim Across America's mission. I am walking for my Mom, my family, & my friends who have fought, are fighting or have lost their battle to cancer and I would be honored to walk for your family and friends as well. Simply email me your loved one's name and I will add it to the list that I will carry as I walk.
Please consider supporting me by making a donation so that I can help to "make waves" against cancer. The monies raise will fund Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy in Stamford, CT (https://acgtfoundation.org) which supports innovative gene and immunotherapy cancer research. If you’d like to join in the fun, register to take on a personal challenge with me! Every bit helps and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure.
