Twins Liza and Kate Pollock were diagnosed with breast cancer within 3 months of each other and before turning 40. We went through hell and back together, each on unique journeys with surgery, treatment, recovery, recurrence and survivorship. Liza is recovering from recurrence and complications from radiation. Kate is recovering from an autoimmune illness that occured after cancer treatment. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the Fairfield Open Water Swim and raising money for the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy.
We have taken different paths to recovery but have utmost mutual respect for our choices. And we inspire each other to keep fighting towards strength and health - something we both work at every day. We’re not sure how to survive without the other. We will swim alongside each other and have friends joining us this year as well.
We swim in honor of our fellow survivors, in memory of our friends' family members, for those in the throes of cancer now, and come hell and high water - we swim for ourselves!
We swim because we think the protocol for cancer treatment needs to change and ACGT is making that happen. Had immunotherapy been an option for us we may have chosen that over other treatments that have left their residue and lingering effects.
100% of the funds we raise will support the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy, the only not-for-profit organization in the nation dedicated exclusively to fostering research into cell and gene therapies for cancer. It's the game changer of cancer treatment. At the forefront of cell and gene therapy is immunotherapy, which aims to awaken the immune system to the threat of cancer and deactivate the inhibitors that block the invasion of killer T-cells. The long-term goal is to develop treatments that attack only cancer cells, eliminating adverse effects on the body.
We are grateful for and honored by your donation.
