Thank you again to everyone who supported my swim this year. We had perfect weather and blue skies. The swim was a huge success as a fundraiser -- funds needed for research that will one day lead to a cure.
Am always amazed (but not surprised) by all those who support my swim. Friends I met last week and people I haven't worked with in years!! Your kind notes give me inspiration. Alone I am not doing anything spectacular but together we are helping to fight cancer, find cures and save our loved ones!! Thanks to everyone for your support and encouraging words.
The Long Island Open Swim is July 27, 2019.
Each year the local team I swim with chooses to swim in honor or memory of someone. For this year’s Swim Across America event, we swim in honor of Bruce Dunbar -- a survivor.
Bruce called our Team Captain in January 2018 to tell him that he had lung cancer. One of his lungs had partially collapsed and he had lesions on his spine and brain. Yet, he was optimistic because of an immunotherapy treatment that had only been approved a month or so before his own diagnosis was found to be a match for his treatment. Today, Bruce is living a 100% normal life because of this treatment!
10 years ago, immunotherapy was still mostly just a dream. With Swim Across America's support for cancer research centers around the country, there are new immunotherapy treatments being announced and released all the time.
As I swim again this year I will be swimming the 2km course in honor of Bruce as well as my childhood friend Debbie who is a cancer survivor, for my cousin Andy who continues to fight his battle with this horrible disease, a dear friend recently diagnosed with Leukemia, and so many others!! Please, please keep all of their families in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you very much for your support as I "Make Waves to Fight Cancer."
