In 1993, I swam in my first SAA event. A relay across Nantucket Sound. My father had just finished treatment for throat cancer.
In 2019, I am joining Team Bruce and swimming the Long Island Sound 5K. My friend, Bruce Dunbar has just finished treament for Stage IV lung cancer.
Team Bruce was created to celebrate the "Wins" - The Survivors of Cancer, like Bruce and my 92 year old father.
Because of early stage research funding by groups like SAA and donors like you, Bruce will be swimming alonside dozens of swimmers this year. Bruce is one of the Winners. In his words, "It's about celebrating the wins, that are becoming more common in the fight against cancer, thanks to research. And about creating even more opportunities for wins in the future."
Please support Swim Across America by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will be going towards an incredible orgainization that is making an impact in the fight to find a cure.
Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
SAA granted a record $5.6 million for 2019 that will fund over 30 research projects. In over three decades, Swim Across America has granted over $80 million dollars that have lead to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, gene therapy, personalized medicine, and new cancer detection methods.
For every dollar SAA grants, our beneficiaries have been able to secure three or more dollars in new funding they might otherwise have not received. 100% of the SAA grant must be applied to the approved clinical trial or research project and not other things such overhead and buildings.
This year the Nobel prize in medicine was given to former MSKCC immunologist James Allison. Much of James's ground breaking work was funded by SAA. Jedd Wolchok, MD, PhD and Head of the Swim Across America Lab at MSK statated "SAA funding has played a major role in clinically developing the four FDA approved immunotherapy medicines ipilimumab, nivolumab, pembrolizumab and atezolizumab."
