Welcome to My Personal Page
Each summer I find a new challenge in triathlon. This summer I’m doubling down on my first love, swimming. Ever since that first length of backstroke at age 5 (Ok, true, it was more like floating on my back with a few arm wiggles—) put me on the AAU swim team at the Y in Rochester, Minnesota, I’ve been swimming ever since. At 8 yrs old I swam my first fundraiser, getting $1 per length for 20 lengths (500 yds).
This year I’m stepping it up a notch. On Saturday, July 27th I’ll be swimming 3 miles (5,280 yds) in Long Island Sound (yes, wetsuit, cap/goggles — FULL coverage!) to raise money for Swim Across America to fight cancer.
Given I typically swim half this distance, it will take some work. But it’s nothing like the challenge my Aunt faces fighting cancer every day; or the 8yr old boy in Rye who’s fighting a rare form of the disease. The 8 yr old should be the one swimming in the Sound, but since he can’t I’m doing it for him. For him, for my aunt; and in honor of my grandfather and dear friend whom we lost to cancer years ago.
Founded in 1987, Swim Across America has raised over $100M to beat cancer. In 2016, monies raised in Larchmont (my chapter) directly funded rectal cancer clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering resulting in 100% omission. Fantastic!!!
The researchers are on their game, and so are the swimmers. I’m joining Swim Across America to make a difference for families. For those who are able, thank you for considering supporting this cause. Every dollar truly makes a difference!
Then think of me on Saturday the 27th. This isn’t a stop-whenever-you-want-and-get-out-of-the-pool kind of swim. But that’s Ok, I’m up for the challenge. Worst case I go a couple extra yards, right?
And if I get tired? You know the trick. I’ll just flip over, wiggle my arms — and let backstroke float me in.
