Long Island Sound Open Water Swim

Team Bruce

In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change the outcomes for everyone of those people. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the Long Island Sound Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as we can.

Swim Across America has been working to support cancer research, treatment, and prevention for more than 25 years. In that time, SAA has raised millions of dollars for Memorial Sloan Kettering and the Morgan Stanley/Columbia Children's Hospital. Since our effort began in Westchester, the landmark discoveries and treatments developed have been truly game-changing.

Memorial Sloan Kettering was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine for developments in immunotherapy. But the early concept of immunotherapy did not qualify for research grants from the Federal government nor many large foundations and would not have proceeded to the development stage without the funding from SAA. Funding made possible by donations from you.

This year we are swimming to honor all the wins - the folks who are beating this disease with the amazing new treatments made possible by research and the years of contributions from SAA and other groups. We're called Team Bruce in honor of our friend an fellow swimmer, Bruce Dunbar. Bruce participated in the first Long Island Sound swim 27 years ago and has been a lifelong member of the Westchester swimming community. In November 2017, he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer.

Thanks to a targeted therapy that became available only one month before he was diagnosed, Bruce is winning his battle. And he's still swimming, still raising his three daughters, and still an active member of his community - all because of the investments in research you and many others have made over the years.

Bruce and all of us want everyone diagnosed with cancer to have treatments like his as an option. That means we need to keep raising money and keep funding research. Please support us by sponsoring our swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention, and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
