Even in these uncertain times, we can continue making waves to fight cancer. As we navigate COVID-19, we've created a special webpage for event updates, helpful information and ways you can continue to support the mission of Swim Across America.
Swim Across America began as a relay swim from Nantucket to Hyannis in 1987 and has now evolved to 21 open water swims and dozens of pool swims around the country. We brought back the tradition of SAA on Nantucket in 2012 with annual swims each summer.
Our annual events consist of hundreds of swimmers (including Olympians) at a gorgeous venue for a day to remember. Distances include a Kids’ Splash or ¼ mile, ½ mile and 1 mile options. We even have a 4 mile option for our long-distance swimmers.
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we are unable to have a live in-person event this summer. Alternatively, we will be offering the following options discussed further below:
Swim Across America-Nantucket will be participating in Coast to Coast - a virtual activity tracking and fundraising challenge where participants will work together to travel across America with a mission to support on-island cancer treatment and patient care. Participants can choose their own activity and goals that will support Team SAA-Nantucket move across America. Activities can include a walk, bike ride, run, swim or any favorite physical activity in any safe location in your local community. You can even log cancer treatment hours! The virtual route will travel to each Swim Across America open water event city (21 ‘stops’) for a 7,686 mile journey. Tracking will begin June 1st and end on August 31.

All 2020 SAA - Nantucket participants will receive the 2020 commemorative shirt as a thank you for their support and commitment to Swim Across America. This shirt features the slogan "The Mission Doesn't Stop" on the front - a reference to 34 years and counting of impact we've had 'Making Waves To Fight Cancer' with all the SAA cities on back. The tri-blend shirt comes in blue to recognize our frontline heroes in hospitals and research centers in this unprecedented year.
We will host a four-mile swim along the North Shore of Nantucket. The swim will be limited to the first 12 registered four mile swimmers to raise $4,000. The swim will take on a date TBD once it has been determined to be safe to do so. Swimmers will need to be on island by the previous day to attend a pre-swim meeting. Each swimmer must provide his or her own kayaker and be able to complete the swim within three hours. Any swimmer in the water after three hours may be pulled from the course at the discretion of the SAA Safety Director and/or Co-Event directors. Swimmers will verify their one mile swim time and past open water experience with Co-Event directors prior to the swim (email email@example.com). Jim Pignato
