Bessie's Swim Page - 2021
Every 15 minutes, 50 Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Even during a pandemic, people continue to hear the terrible words ‘you have cancer’. I have joined the Swim Across America-Nantucket family so that I can continue to give cancer patients hope by raising funds to support on-island cancer treatment and patient care.
This is my sixth year swimming for SAA. WE ARE BACK - I started this swim with my husband John in memory of his wife Sue. As we all have experienced, cancer continues to significantly impact so many lives. I am proudly swimming for those that I love and have lost. It is so critical that we continue to raise awareness and funds to find a CURE. Those who inspire me everyday due to their strength and passion for life - are my sister Maryann Polito, Adele Keeley, Jim Keohane as well as in memory of Susan Szum and Bobby Russell.
As a nurse I am humbled every day by the care, compassion and support that health care providers give not only to their patients but their families and loved ones. Cancer affects everyone at some point - so whether you support my cause or any cause - please lets join together to beat this disease.
As many of you know, when I started this I was not a great swimmer but after 6 years I am a more confident in the open water and enthusiastically await the day of the swim. So on July 24, with my other swimming partners and in an attractive wet suit (hopefully not to be mistaken for a seal by some wandering shark) we will swim to raise awareness and funds.
Thank you for your support
