Welcome to Scott B's Home Page
Family, friends, colleagues: I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I have signed up again for the Swim Across America Open Water Swim Fundraising Event in Nantucket later this month. These swims occur across the country and raise funds for cancer treatment. More specifically, the event on Nantucket raises funds for local oncology efforts through Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket. Obviously cancer is destructive no matter where one lives but living on an island creates an additional obstacle and expense in obtaining the necessary care. The fact that the proceeds are really geared towards helping residents stricken with cancer get the care they need locally on island stuck out to me as something I wanted to support.
Having now participated once before and seeing how well run the event is while also hearing live from both the providers and recipients of the care that comes from all of the money raised I definitely wanted to do it again and seek support in raising funds.
Since 2013 the event has raised $1.22mm for local cancer treatment and care for beneficiaries on Nantucket. Last year $342k was raised and was the biggest tally yet for the Nantucket swim. If you have a chance to read a bit more below and support the cause by donating on my behalf I would greatly appreciate it.
Below is the standard information and content that will give a little more perspective on the fundraising efforts.
In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We joined the SAA community so that, together, we can change that. We are challenging ourselves by swimming in the Nantucket Island Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer on Nantucket.
With every dollar raised from our Swim, we are changing the game of cancer care on Nantucket and we should all be proud of that. Proceeds directly support the Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) and the Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON) oncology efforts to fund vital services for local and visiting cancer patients, minimizing their need to travel for appointments, testing and treatment. Our support allows NCH oncology programs to keep more Nantucket residents on-island for their cancer care, providing them a compassionate and caring environment. We help bring world-class oncologists to the island, allowing our patients to receive treatments at home. Through PASCON, our patients and families receive important physical, emotional and spiritual care free of charge.
Please support us by sponsoring our swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer care on Nantucket. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!Every 15 minutes, 50 Americans are diagnosed with cancer.
This year I will be "Making Waves in the Fight Against Cancer" by swimming in the Nantucket Island Open Water Swim on August 27, 2016 to benefit on-island cancer treatment and patient care through the Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON).
Most of us know someone who is dealing with cancer, and how devastating it can be both for the person who is ill and for the family. Cancer touches everyone, and living with this disease on a remote island can make things much more difficult.
Nantucket Cottage Hospital has teamed up with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center to bring world-class oncologists to Nantucket on a bi-weekly basis. In addition, as a result of our annual swims, we now have an oncology nurse practitioner on-island five days per week. NCH also offers chemotherapy services for our patients who need them.
Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket has developed a Cancer Survivorship Support Program offering - free of charge, the extra layers of support needed to help patients and families live with and cope with this disease from the moment of diagnosis onward.
