Welcome to My Personal Page
In late July, I will set out to do something I never contemplated before. I will attempt to complete a 4-mile open water swim in Nantucket Sound to raise money for Swim Across America - Nantucket.
I am not a life-long swimmer. In fact, I didn’t swim with any sort of instruction until after I got married, and in my mind, I still suck at swimming. But, cancer patients suck at cancer too. No one prepares to get cancer, but it happens and it’s a terrible ordeal to go through (we know - we’ve been through it twice).
Fighting cancer is hard under any circumstances, but when you live hours away from a metropolitan city it makes it even harder. For years we raised money for Pink Vail to support cancer patients in the Vail Valley. This swim will raise money to help support cancer patients on Nantucket. Why Nantucket? Well, our friends Jill & Steve Roethke helped bring Swim Across America to Nantucket when they were dealing with cancer while living on the island and realized how hard it is to not have cancer services and survivor programs close by. We have always donated to their efforts and this year we are here on island to volunteer and swim to raise money for the event.
This is the 10th year of the swim here on Nantucket and thanks to many volunteers and generous donors Swim Across America - Nantucket has raised funds to support on island cancer care. They have funded doctors and nurses from Massachusetts General Hospital who now come to the island to offer services and appointments so patients can get some of their care right here with no need to travel. Just as important, they have funded many survivorship care services needed to help patients with rebuilding their body, mind and spirit.
I will swim for Team Roethke to honor my friend Steven Roethke who is 10 years cancer free. I have to commit to raise $4,000 to the 4-mile swim. Yes, there are shorter swims, but I feel like pushing my limits much like cancer patients are pushed to the limit. So on July 24 I will swim. I’m prepared to match the first $4K donated by you with $2 for each $1 donated, resulting in a total goal of $12,000.
