Sound to Cove Open Water Swim

Our Answer To Cancer

Dear Friends and Family,

Team Our Answer To Cancer was formed several years ago by combining Team SAAVE and Team EMC SAAVE, who have participated in this event since its inception. We came up with this combined team name because it defines our mission, which is for people who care to come together and raise as much money as we can to help fund the necessary research and treatment priorities to cure Cancer….”Our Answer To Cancer”.

Kevin Shine asked me to participate in this event back in 2003 when my brother Paul was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma, which metastasized to his liver in 2008 and he passed away in 2010. I will always lead this team in memory of my brother Paul and all those who have passed before and after him.

This years event is being held on August 3rd and Team Our Answer To Cancer will dedicate the swim to the memory of my beautiful sister JoAnn DiMaso, age 58, who passed away on October 31st 2019 from Lepto Meningeal Disease, her 4th cancer type.  JoAnn fought courageously over most of her life having been diagnosed with her first cancer at the young age of 24. She then went on to battle breast cancer and lung cancer before Lepto Meningeal Disease. Her strength, determination and courage were an inspiration to us all but what truly defined JoAnn was her beauty inside and out. She was the most genuine, kind and caring person and was loved by all. JoAnn leaves behind her husband Tony and her two children, Anthony and Angela. Her daughter Angela is in the middle of her own battle having been diagnosed with Leukemia before JoAnn passed away. We will swim in honor of Angela who is being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

We will also continue to swim in memory of our beloved Richie Magnussen who passed away in March of 2018 from small intestine cancer. Richie was treated for almost 6 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) so he was a huge advocate for SAA and the great things we are doing in the fight against Cancer. Richie is survived by his wife Donna and their 5 children and 4 grandchildren, all of which participate in the swim! Most recently, Richies grandaughter Brooke Pena, was honored by the NY Islanders for her involvement and fundraising with Swim Across America.

Please help our cause by joining our team as a swimmer, volunteer or make a secure online donation on our website. There is no better way to honor or memorialize your loved ones as the proceeds go directly to Cancer Research & Treatment Priorities at MSK, Mercy Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, Feinstein Institute at LIJ, Cold Spring Harbor Labs and Fighting Chance!

Thank you & God Bless,

Jim Sirignano
