2022 NS - Sound to Cove Open Water Swim

Our Answer To Cancer

Dear Friends and Family,

Team Our Answer To Cancer was formed several years ago and defines our overall mission, which is for friends and family who have been affected by Cancer to come together as a team and raise as much money as we can to help fund the necessary research and treatment priorities to cure Cancer….”Our Answer To Cancer”.

Kevin Shine asked me to participate in this event back in 2003 when my brother Paul was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma, which metastasized to his liver in 2008 and he passed away in 2010. In July of 2017, we lost my Father-in-Law Tom to Esophogeal Cancer. In February 2018, we lost my Dad to late stage Multiple Sclerosis and then in March of 2018, we lost my brother-in-law Richie to Small Intestine Cancer. Later that year on October 31st 2018, we lost my beautiful sister JoAnn to Lepto Meningeal Disease after battling Hodgkins, Breast and Lung Cancer prior to that. On March 19, 2020, Tom Malone, my son-in-law Rob's father, passed away from Metastatic Melanoma. Tom was only diagnosed on February 2, 2020, had emergency back surgery later that week and then immediately began radiation and immunotherapy treatments at Memorial Sloan Kettering over the next 45-days before succumbing to the disease. Tom was an avid fisherman and kayaker, having kayaked over 500 miles per summer in the Long Island waters. He was a great family man and was so proud of his wife Meg, 3 children (Caitlin, Rob & Sarah) and 3 grandchildren (James, Grant and Benjamin). Tom was also President of VOXX Advanced Solutions in Hauppauge, NY one of our corporate sponsors, and had an incredible zest for family, work and life. In July of 2020, we lost our dear friend Leeward Bean to Metastatic Melanoma. Leeward was instrumental in helping get the SAA Tampa Bay Swim off the ground back in 2011.

On a more positive note, there is incredible work being done in the fight against Cancer and that is never more evident than when we received the incredible news that my niece Angela (my sister JoAnn's daughter) is in remission after a 2-1/2 year battle with Leukemia. Angela is also following in her Mom's footsteps as she recently became a Nurse and one of her dreams is to work at Memorial Sloan Kettering so she can give back by taking great care of Cancer patients, like they took care of her.

Please help our cause by joining our team as a swimmer, volunteer or make a secure online donation on our website. There is no better way to honor or memorialize your loved ones as proceeds from your Personal Challenge will support immunotherapy research at the Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, lung cancer clinical trials at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, pediatric brain cancer research at the Feinstein Institute of North Shore and pediatric oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital.

Thank you & God Bless,

Jim Sirignano
