Kara Parsons talked me into signing up for Swim Across America 4 years ago when I wasn’t even an open water swimmer. Kara coaxed, encouraged and harangued me to train for what ended up being a beautiful morning swimming to Chrissy Field from the Golden Gate Bridge.
For the past three years Kara pushed me to swim and fundraise to help cure pediatric cancer. Sadly, four months ago, Kara lost her own battle with breast cancer. So this year I am not just swimming and fundraising for pediatric cancer - but also to keep Kara’s hope of making a difference in the treatments for and outcomes of pediatric cancer.
In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. Many of us have lost friends and family members to cancer. My mother died of inflammatory breast cancer in 2007. Far too many of my friends have died from cancer, are fighting cancer or are cancer survivors.
