I hope that everyone is doing well during this crazy time. While this year’s Swim Across America SF Bay swim event has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, cancer won’t rest. Drs. Saba and Goldsby continue their important work, and their programs at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital still rely on generous donations.
This year Swim Across America has been modified to a virtual program. It is called the Coast-to-Coast Challenge, and it spans from Nantucket to Los Angeles. I’m hoping that you will consider joining me and the San Francisco-based Team Susan Survives (the team I have been swimming with for four years) to raise money for pediatric cancer research.
The SF team, which includes everyone registered for the SF Bay swim, will be “racing” against all of the other teams. The Coast-to-Coast challenge invites people from all over the country to do their own activities including exercising, receiving cancer treatments, and even baking. Donations are made based on the activities that are tracked.
My personal activity goal in support of Swim Across America was to attempt to swim the True Width of Lake Tahoe. At 4am on August 4th I began my 12-mile attempt. My mom and dad crewed for me and I completed the swim successfully in 6 hours and 21 minutes. While it was incredibly challenging, it was nothing compared to the challenge that cancer patients face every day. I reminded myself of that throughout the entire swim. Here's a link to my swim tracker: https://www.tahoeopenwater.org/tahoe-swim-tracks/true-width-maya-merhige/
Thank you to everybody that has kindly donated.
The mission doesn't stop, and nor do I! For one final push, I'll be doing a circumnavigation of Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay to end the swim season.
If you would like me to honor a friend or family member who has been touched by cancer, please let me know and I’ll write their name on the cap that I will use for my swim. I will also be including everybody's name that I had for Lake Tahoe.
You can make a credit card donation here, or send a check to Swim Across America, c/o Anthony DuComb, 1684 8th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122. Checks should be made out to Swim Across America but please include a note mentioning my name-Maya Merhige-as the swimmer you are supporting!
Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
