The Mission Doesn't Stop! We've reached the coast to coast finish line, but we can keep fighting cancer. Anyone that is passionate about cancer research and wants to continue to support SAA - Seattle and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance can participate in their own personal challenge all year.
How can I still support SAA-Seattle?
Even in these uncertain times, we can continue making waves to fight cancer. As we navigate COVID-19, we've created a special webpage for event updates, helpful information and ways you can continue to support the mission of Swim Across America.
Over the last 11 years SAA-Seattle has raised nearly $4.0 million, which has been leveraged to obtain matching grants that would otherwise not have been obtained. Thanks to the efforts of our swimmers, volunteers and donors, our 2019 SAA-Seattle event provided $450,000 in research grants to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance(SCCA). The SCCA and SAA - Seattle conducted a comprehensive grant application process and selected 6 doctors/researchers with cancer projects that will be able to leverage our grant dollars to receive further funding and provide even greater impact. Please see the link to the 2020 Grantees and their project here.
We hope to build on that solid foundation with our 2020 event. Due to COVID-19 we are unable to have a live in-person event this summer. We have always had a virtual option to our event and this year plan to go FULLY virtual with a fun event to keep everyone safe, yet actively engaged, while raising money for our unique mission. The virtual event will allow us to expand beyond open water swimmers to any and all fitness enthusiasts. It will culminate with a virtual celebration on Sept 26th 2020. We encourage you to share our new event information with your friends and family.
The Swim Across America: Coast to Coast Challenge is a virtual activity tracking and fundraising challenge where participants will work together to travel across America with a mission to support cancer research and clinical trials. Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) brings together the leading research teams and cancer specialists of Fred Hutch, Seattle Children's, and UW Medicine. When you seek treatment at SCCA, you access an extraordinary group whose sole mission is the pursuit of better, longer, richer lives for our patients.
For the past eleven years, the Seattle chapter of SAA has generously supported research at SCCA, raising nearly $4.0 million to directly benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Specialty Clinic and the Swim Across America Cellular Therapy Lab. Last year, volunteer efforts bridged funding gaps; accelerated research in pancreas cancer—an area of exceptional need; and supported immunotherapy—an area of great promise.
