In our lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer. We have all been affected by cancer, whether directly or indirectly, and can feel like a four letter word when we say or think it. We all have happy and sad stories to tell when asked if we know anyone that has fought cancer. One common theme - BRAVERY. Bravery of those battling this terrible disease and bravery for those supporting their loved ones. My personal story has changed even since last year.
One of my husbands best friends of over 35 years recently passed from a short battle with metastatic colon cancer. He left behind 2 young kids and grieving family and friends. He quite honestly was one of the happiest most genuine people we had the honor of knowing and blessed countless people in his life. This year, I unfortunately add him to my list of friends and family that have battled cancer bravely.
My mom, who bravely fought triple negative breast cancer and is over 5 years out!! My dad, who is currently in remission and still bravely fighting angio-immunoblastic T-cell lymphoma on chronic therapy every 4 weeks. My mother-in-law, who bravely battled pancreatic cancer and lost. Our neighbor, who is still fighting her brave fight against colon cancer. My aunt, who lost her brave fight against BRCA breast cancer.
I know you can empathize and understand why I choose to volunteer and raise funds for Swim Across America. This empowers us to fight along side our brave friends and family who have battled and currently battling cancer and for those of us who may one day be facing this battle by raising money for research locally at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I am volunteering in the Seattle Open Water Swim and raising as much money to fight cancer as I can. Please support me by sponsoring the swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure. Thank you for your generosity and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
You can make a credit card donation here, or send a check to Swim Across America - Seattle, 8711 SE 44th Place, Mercer Island, WA 98040.
Check should be made out to Swim Across America but please include a note mentioning my name as the swimmer you are supporting!
