Sequim Sea Dragons
"Founded in 1987, Swim Across America has hosted charity swims with one goal: to raise money for innovative cancer research that would lead to breakthrough treatments and therapies. Since then, Swim Across America has raised over $100M to fund the next generation of oncology and cancer-support care pioneers."
This will be the Sequim Sea Dragons' first: Swim Across America; an open-water swim; a "long-distance marathon". Donations for this swim will go to the Seattle beneficiary, the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Swimmers will participate in an open water swim of varying distances (.5 mile, 1 mile, & 2 mile). The event will take place on September 7th, 7:30 am at Lake Sammamish State Park.
Our team is currently made up of young adult swimmers from the Sequim Masters team. Luis Rodriguez, Ciera Skelly, and Will Plasch have stepped up to create a team in support of the SAA mission and Melanie Byrne's cause, who first swam at SAA last year.
"This mission is close to my heart because my grandmother, Deborah Norman, passed in September of 2022 from pancreatic cancer. She was an inspirational leader to friends and family and an extraordinary example of love. We had a close bond, and I miss her every day. Since her passing, my mom, Kaylene Byrne was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is enduring the difficult process of chemo-radiation. I am eager to participate in this event and contribute to such a noble cause. Any and all support and donations are greatly appreciated in the memory of my grandma and honor of my mother."
We are proud of all our fundraising swimmers. If you would like to join our team or participate in a virtual swim, feel free to reach out to melliepaige14@gmail.com
